The Hitchhikers' Guide to The Galaxy was the best book of the 80s. Overall the 80s sucked hard; Repo Man captures the essence of it. The Breakfast Club was a good illustration of public school, but it was hard to sit through. If they had more punks beating up teachers and pedophiles molesting the girls, it would have been more accurate and maybe even sold more tix. Fuck censorship.

Repo Man was so natural for the 80's. It just seems to encapsulate that era. Much the same for the Matrix now, at least for me.

A friend and I saw Repo Man in the Spring of 1980 or 81. As we left the movie theatre near the OSU campus in Columbus, we had to jump out of the way as we were trying to cross the stree and nearly got run down by a car that was squealinhg tires in order to not miss the traffic light. My friend asked me if I got a good look at the car that nearly hit us. I replied that I did. He then asked me to describe it to him. "It was a turquoise 1966 Chevelle, I replied." He just smiled and wanted to be sure that he was not imagining things. Yeah, that really happened, "just coincidence" my girl friend told me.

Repo Man is quite possibly the ultimate film of the 1980s. There were a few great films of the decade(Raging Bull, Brazil, Blue Velvet, Do the Right Thing), some fun films for nostalgia's sake (Ghostbusters, The Neverending Story), and a lot of crap, but no film captured the nihilistic, nightmarish view of American society going down the toilet during the Reagan years quite like this film.

Every decade has a defining film. The Sixties? Dr. Strangelove. The Seventies? None. It was a decade run by and for moronic nothings, most of whom continue to profit obscenely. The Eighties was upheld by two pillars. The prophetic Blue Velvet beautifully prefigured the vomitose post-80s/90's era in which we find ourselves. For ethereal comic relief, repo man bequeathed entertainment sublime - for the condemned.

Miller is probably my favorite film character of all-time, and the dialogue he has with Otto (Plate 'o Shrimp) is one of the best pieces of dialogue ever committed to film.
